The average shrimp trawling operation throws 80 to 90 percent of the sea animals it captures overboard, dead as bycatch. Shrimp account for only 2% of global seafood by weight, but shrimp trawling accounts for 32% of global bycatch. Imagine if when you went to purchase shrimp at the market, it came with a warning label that said, "28 pounds of other sea animals were killed for this one pound of shrimp." Would you still buy it? Probably. Warning labels never really deterred anyone from buying cigarettes, so why should seafood warning labels. Anyway, next time your ordering one of those cute little shrimp cocktail appetizers, maybe go for the green salad instead.
